A Prince Among Men

Very few people or especially music artists are a genius or a legend. These words have become ‘hype’ in an industry where ‘hype’ is more important than talent. Prince had more talent than we could understand.

Prince wrote his first song at the age of seven. He went on to sell over 100 million albums. Prince was an excellent songwriter. I have every album. I never listened to an album before purchase, because I knew there would be a song that I would love. He has written songs for others. The first hit for the Bangles, ‘Magic Monday’ was written by Prince. Tevin Campbell’s hit ‘Round and Round’ and Chaka Khan’s ‘I Feel For You’ are all his work along with ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, which was Sinead O’Connor’s breakout track. Alica Keys covered ‘How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore’ and TLC covered ‘If I Were Your Girlfriend’.

The record company on hearing Prince’s first demo album asked who the band members were. Prince was the only answer. He played every instrument on the demo and he played them so well, the company wanted to hire the whole band. He was such a formidable artist that when he auditioned to join Cameo before he became famous, they said no!

Prince was a talented vocalist. In technical language, his vocal range was E2 to B6. I love his falsetto wrenched ballads. I also love his funky stuff. He was an amazing dancer. He had a sexiness about his moves that escaped Michael Jackson, in my opinion. I saw him perform several times and his concerts always felt intimate. Except at the O2 in London, the venue was far too big but the concert was good value for money. He was one of the greatest live performers and he did not need whistles and bells, lights and explosions.

Prince produced and engineered music. He was incredibly gifted. Prince was an all-round great yet; he was also humble. He played guitar on three tracks for Madonna’s album ‘Love Song’ for which he was uncredited. He also played guitar for Erykah Badu on stage for four hours.

In this age of auto-tune and attitude, we are unlikely to see his kind again. He was an inspiration. Prince was a Prince and a Gentleman and he has left us a great legacy.
